Connecticut Invasive Plant Working Group Symposium

Please note the following announcements regarding the 2018 CIPWG Symposium:

1.    Online registration for the CIPWG symposium on October 4, 2018 in Storrs, CT is now available.  Visit the CIPWG website or click here to register online. The symposium program and directions can be found on the CIPWG website.  Please share with your colleagues and affiliates.

2.    Nominations are now being accepted for the Leslie J. Mehrhoff Award, which will be presented during the symposium.  Previous award recipients include Donna Ellis, Kathleen Nelson, and Susan Parr.

3.    You are cordially invited to present a poster at the CIPWG symposium.  Poster content will include topics relevant to invasive plant research, management, education, and native alternatives.  College and high school students are encouraged to participate.

4.    CIPWG 2018 FIELD TRIP: “Non-chemical Japanese Barberry Management in Avon, CT: A Success Story” on Saturday, October 6, 2018, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM at Fisher Meadows Recreation Area, 839 Old Farms Rd, Avon, CT.  In an ongoing experiment at Fisher Meadows Recreation Area, Bill Moorhead (project instigator and trip leader) has worked with Farmington River Watershed Association volunteers on Japanese Barberry control.  Using various pulling techniques (and weed torching in one area), crews have worked over the past 11 years in increments across a 5.5-acre portion of highly infested High Floodplain Forest along the Farmington River.  Following control efforts, changes in vegetation have been monitored yearly in detail.  On the field trip, we will walk chronologically through each of the treated areas.  Moorhead will discuss the methods used, initial and subsequent results of treatment, lessons learned, and hypotheses generated.
