Leaves have a smooth margin. They are opposite, oval-shaped, compound with 3-5 leaflets that are 2-3 inches long. The leaves distinguish it from the native virgin's bower which has a toothed margin.
White flowers with four petals, highly fragrant.

A climbing, deciduous or semi-evergreen perennial vine
Seeds are produced in profusion and are showy due to long, silver-gray, feather-like hairs attached

In the Lower Hudson valley, Japanese virgin's bower typcially begins flowering in mid-September after the native virgin's bower has finished flowering.
